History of the Pease District Park
Established in 1875, Pease District Park is one of Texas’ oldest public parks. The land was generously donated by Governor Elisha M. Pease and his wife, Lucadia, who envisioned a communal space for Austinites. Over the years, the park has witnessed significant events, including serving as a campsite for General George Armstrong Custer’s troops during the Reconstruction era. In the 1920s, the Austin Kiwanis Club spearheaded beautification efforts, adding amenities like restrooms and memorial gates.
