History of Republic Square
Originally established in 1839, Republic Square is one of Austin’s four original public squares laid out in Edwin Waller’s city plan. The site is best known for the historic Auction Oaks, where the first city land lots were sold. Over the decades, it became a gathering place for Austin’s Mexican-American community, earning the nickname “Mexican Park.”
